PILATES FOR SCOLIOSIS

Scoliosis is a complex condition where the spine curves sideways, and often rotates too. It can vary in severity, with some people having mild curves that do not significantly affect their lives, while others may have more pronounced curves that lead to various issues, most commonly muscles pain.

Strengthening the muscles around the spine is crucial for individuals with scoliosis because stronger muscles can help support the spine better. This can potentially slow the progression of the curve and help manage any discomfort or pain associated with the condition. Moreover, muscular strength can contribute to better posture and balance, which are often compromised in people with scoliosis and any form of spinal misalignments.

Let’s team up with our Pilates teachers to craft a curve management plan tailored specifically to your needs and aspirations. Every journey with scoliosis is unique, and we’re here to support you every step forward. Participating in various daily activities including sports is possible with the right approach!

This program is for

  • Anyone who are diagnosed as scoliosis
  • Anyone who have spinal deviation (some called it “minor scoliosis”), or significant rotation or shifting on pelvis or ribcage that causes pain on the body

Program Component and Goals

  • An initial assessment of the body condition, postural and muscular imbalances.
  • Design a customized program to help with restoring functions through the whole system including working with the deep musculature to support the body, strengthen the weaker muscles, and stretch/release the tighter ones.
  • To help clients focus on proper muscle engagement to avoid any movements that might worsen their curvature/rotation/shifting.
  • To assist clients in building body awareness, further promote supported posture and better alignment, potentially helping to manage pain (if any) and improve overall quality of life.
  • Program consist of One-on-One sessions and home program.

Program Detail

Phase 1

Understand own body condition and establish postural awareness.

Activate core muscles, including breathing exercise, to work towards improving postural alignment and muscles imbalances.

Manage pain, if any.

Duration: 10-20 sessions depending of the body condition and client’s commitment to the program. Less or more may be required.

Frequency: twice a week, plus home work time.

Phase 2

Further strengthen core muscles to support posture and improve imbalances

Make tight muscles more flexible and weak muscles stronger with “Stretch & Strengthen” approach

Enhance movement control in a less supportive set up, to lead the body towards being independent.

Duration: 20-30 sessions depending of the body condition and client’s commitment to the program. Less or more may be required.

Frequency: twice a week, plus home work time.

Phase 3

Further training on movement with greater control to achieve high body awareness

Strengthen global muscles along with local muscles to build overall body strength and functionality

Duration: 20-30 sessions depending of the body condition and client’s commitment to the program. Less or more may be required.

Frequency: twice a week, plus home work time.

Phase 4

This is a maintenance stage. Clients can continue with a weekly private session.

There are possibilities that clients could join group classes or form own duet/trio/group sessions with friends/family members. Please discuss with the teacher or the studio.

Results

You will expect to gain a good understanding on your body imbalances and tailored program goals, and building postural awareness at phase 1.

At phase 2, you should start to notice the changes on your body – it could be improvement on body alignment, muscles strength and/or range of motion; provided you have built a good awareness and commit to your workout plan at phase 1.

The ultimate goal of this program is to restore a body that is fully functional and pain-free regardless of the shape of your spine. At the end of phase 3, you should gain confidence in carry out activities in a safe manner.
